Thailand’s reduction in the visa-free stay is coming into force.
Thailand has officially published the regulations ending the 60-day visa exemption scheme in its Royal Gazette.
From September 15th 2026, nationals of 60 countries and territories, including New Zealand, will be allowed to visit Thailand for a maximum of 30 days without a visa, reduced from the existing 60 day allowance.
Grandfather Clause: Visitors already in Thailand or those entering before the new rules begin are permitted to keep their original length of stay.
The new regulations are geared towards tourism – business travellers will now need visas.
The new regulations specifically state that the exemption applies for tourism purposes. It does not keep the reference to certain short-term work activities and business engagements included under the 60-day exemption that is now being repealed.
Those travelling for a short holiday won’t be affected, but clients planning extended visits or business trips of any length of stay will need to apply for their visa prior to travel.
When should I apply for my visa?
Thailand’s eVisa typically takes around 5 working days to receive a decision.
This means that any travellers visiting Thailand for tourism on or after September 15th 2026 and plan to stay over 30 days, or those travelling for business for any length of stay, should aim to apply at least a week prior to travel.
We anticipate the embassy will receive a high volume of applications initially, and applicants are advised to apply well in advance of travel.
